The issue of leakage from a Mitsubishi air conditioner is one of the common problems that happen to every aircon owner. In fact, most aircon contractors say that the majority of the calls they receive are from leaking air conditioners. Therefore, it should not come as a shock to you when you see water dripping right through your ceiling or even worse, water dripping from the wall. However messy the aircon problem appears, do not worry because this is a problem that can be fixed easily.

There are many reasons why your Mitsubishi aircon could be leaking. Before delving into how to fix the aircon problem, it is important to look at some causes of this problem.

Reasons for the aircon leak

Emission of water

During the course of operation, all air conditioners produce water (condensate) as a by product of the cooling cycle. As long as the air conditioner is in perfect working condition, the resulting water is channeled out of the system through the plumbing system. The designers of the aircon have provided for two water outlets. This is to offer an alternative route to the water flowing out just in case the primary outlet gets clogged with gunk and algae. Blockage of the primary pipe is often caused by lack of maintenance of the system.

So, next time you notice a leak, just know that either one or both of the water outlets has been blocked. You need to know that a water leak through the ceiling is severe. It could mean that the problem has been in existence for a longer period. Water leaking through the ceiling causes considerable damage to your home. It will require plumbers, electricians, painters and rock repair to counter the problem.

Metal pans

Use of old model evaporators is another cause of the leakage. These old model evaporators were designed with pans made of metal. Metal rusts when it is consistently exposed to water. Consequently, the rust causes the metal to develop holes and leak to the interior or exterior of your home.

Here’s what you need to do to fix a Mitsubishi air conditioner

The Mitsubishi air conditioner is a robust piece of equipment that gets the air conditioning job done efficiently. If you live in Singapore, then you are aware that this air conditioning device is a must have for your home or commercial premises. However, you conditioner will not remain in this exemplary state for long. After a while, leaking problems will start to emerge from the machine.

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

Stop the water leakage

This is a no-brainer. The initial step that you need to take is to remove the aircon from the wall or the window to stop continued leakage. The aircon is heavy, and a single person may not be able to lift or move it. Seek help so that you can gently move the machine to another spot. While detaching from the wall, you should be careful to follow the instructions contained in the manual. It is advisable that you read the manual to ease the process for you. Once you have unscrewed everything, place the unit on a firm flat surface. Avoid dirty and wet surfaces such as the grass as they can spoil the outer covering of the air conditioner.

Uncover the unit

The next step is to use a screwdriver to uncover the unit. Most of the Mitsubishi air conditioner models use four to six screws to hold the cover. Once again, gently unscrew them and keep these screws in a tin so you do not lose them. Due to the variations of models, there is no single technique of unscrewing the cover. You’ll be surprised that some models even have up to 10 screws. So, be observant to avoid forcefully opening the cover while some screws remain intact.

Deal with the problem

A plastic tray that rests at the bottom of the unit becomes visible once the cover of the unit is out of place. This is the tray that collects water molecules that condense during the cooling process where it is then emptied via a tube. You may also notice that the water has dust, some depositions of mold and other particles that come with air that is blown and accumulates over time.

To remove these depositions, connect a garden hose and let the gush of water clean the tray for about ten minutes. Add some bleach to the tray to altogether remove the sticky depositions. Let the bleach rest for another 5-10 minutes to achieve effective results. Connect the hose again and let the pressured water empty the bleach and the dirt from the tray. After the bleach has been cleared, spray the inside of the aircon with a garden hose but with minimal pressure. Repeat the process of cleaning the tray and the inside of the aircon over and over again, until you are satisfied that it is completely clean.

Dry the aircon

After this rigorous process, your air conditioning device should be clean and free of any dirt, debris and depositions. Place the aircon outside in the sunlight and let it dry.

Screw back the cover

Check that your aircon is completely dry. Now it is time to screw back the cover and any other components that you might have removed before cleaning. To do this, simply follow the reverse of the process that you used to remove the cover. It is a fairly easy process. If you encounter any problem, refer to the product manual. Return the air conditioner to the window and let it run for a while. Be keen to observe any new occurrences such as noise and leakage. This should fix the leak on your Mitsubishi air conditioner.

If it is still leaking, you need to seek the services of an expert. This is a person who is experienced and trained on how to deal with common air conditioner problems.
